Restoring Hope

“When I didn’t even have love for myself, I was shown nothing but love.”
One of our Neighbors, John, recently shared his experience with VMC and it serves as a powerful reminder of why this work matters.
- VMC Client, John Beene
After experiencing homelessness for several years, John first connected with Volunteer Ministry Center through The Foyer, a former low-barrier shelter operated by VMC. There, he began working with Dyrl and Shelby, Street Outreach Case Managers, who helped him take the first steps toward stability.
John later transitioned into our Day Program, where he worked closely with Stephanie, Resource Center Case Manager, and Andrea, Director of the Resource Center. What began as conversations and support grew into something more: trust, stability, and a path toward a brighter future.
Today, John has a place to call home. Reflecting on his journey, John shared: “They helped me become a better man. They helped me find a better way to live. I have an apartment now. I have hope in my life again. I have faith in the world again.”
For John, housing meant more than four walls. It meant safety. It meant no longer worrying about where he would sleep at night. It meant having a place where he could rest and finally exhale. And it meant something else that mattered deeply to him: a home for his dog.
John shared that throughout his experience with VMC, he was met with kindness and support during a time when he struggled to see value in himself. John shared, “When I didn’t even have love for myself, I was shown nothing but love.” Even now, after securing housing, John knows he still has people in his corner.
Stories like John’s remind us that ending homelessness is about more than housing, it’s about relationships, consistency, and walking alongside someone as they rebuild hope and stability.
